It really depends, firstly, what and where your business in its development path before choosing a networking/social networking approach. A fan page is for further along the trail.

Generally, for paid advertising, choose cost per click unless your business will benefit from branding. That will assume you already have a substantial place in your market.

I still think Twitter is a game at which smaller businesses will not fare very well if you are marketing to consumers. It doesn't make sales, but only to overall influence sales. For BtoB, it may well help you to appear to others to be legitimate, but clearly business networking with micro blogging is plain silly.

I began my approach with a simple document that explored possibilities, and built it from there after much reading and mulling. Only after several months was my plan attractive and reasonable enough to begin to execute the costs and the work.

This might seem daunting to some of us, but remember that these social networks are potentially a powerful marketing tool that is in many ways free. I remind myself that not so long ago, I could hardly have dreamed of these marketing options.

Thanks Richard!

I agree Urs, time management is certainly an issue many find in respect to social media. We can get so caught up in it if we don't have clear objectives and a strategy.

Dear Lee-Ann

Facebook has been difficult for me to figure out as well since I am in B2B. My concern is that there is only that much time I have besides LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogging ... and on top of it I want to play with my kid...

With LinkedIn and Xing .... its probably fine as this post suggests, however, you can waste time...

On the personal level you might need other means besides Xing or LinkedIn as Deborah discusses here:

Thanks so much for sharing this with your readers.
