Is your blog wallpaper? And how to be a centre piece!
September 24, 2009 | 4 Comments
You may be thinking what an odd question. Or maybe you have a similar philosophy to me. I have always said that to achieve in life you can’t be wallpaper, you need to stand out from the crowd. Standing out from the crowd gets you noticed, but if the wrong people notice you, you might as well be wall paper.
By wrong people I don’t mean negative publicity, I mean people who won’t make a difference to you achieving.
Centre pieces can be elegant, subtle, stylish, loud or extravagant. No matter what, a centre piece is always in front of the people around the table. And if the right people are around the table they will love the centre piece and notice it, even if it is subconsciously. If the wrong people are around the table it may not even be noticed or worse it will be ignored.
So, what does this have to do with blogging?
With a million zillion (if such a number exists) blogs out there it is easy to be wall paper. Some blogs start with a huge marketing budget, all the best experts and contributors and they get noticed. Does this mean that without this our blogs are doomed to be wallpaper? Do we have a chance of being a centre piece? I say that depends on you!
Here are 3 of my tips to becoming a centre piece:
Brand your Blog
I have come across the phrase ‘personal branding’ quite often and can’t think of a better way to say it. Your blog is part of your personal brand; it speaks volumes about who you are and what you know. Just like the first impression of a person you meet, the look (and feel) of your blog will leave a first impression, then as people read they will form opinions about you. If you have a strong identity the right people will identify with you. Know who you are, else others won’t either.
Set Goals
You need to know where you going with your blog. Do you have an idea or did you start blogging to see where it takes you? Unfortunately, it could take you nowhere if you don’t know. Is your blogging just for fun, do you want to get exposure as an industry expert, do you want to sell on the net or is your goal to earn an in-direct income?
Make sure the right people know about you
You need to know who you want visiting and reading your blog. You want to be the admired centre piece (even those that are controversial). You need to work at driving traffic that will achieve your goals. You need to form relationships (not stalk) with other experts in your topic of expertise, you may be able to do some co-operative or affiliate marketing. There are many online mediums that can be used to get the attention of the right people.
I will go into more detail on these 3 tips in future articles as there is much to say about each.
Keep an eye out for my next article about whether we can truly be unique.

Hi Richard.
Thank-you for your feed-back and I couldn’t agree more — we can always do (or at least try to do) better.
Lee-Ann, Great item, I found myself working through the content going, umm yes, yes and yes — but I know I can always do better. Take Care,
Thanks Joan. Please feel free to email me if you would like advice.
Lee-Ann This is a great article and I am looking forward to future ones. I’m really interested in how to use blogs for marketing and attracting the right persons.
