I hate being sold to! So what gets me to buy?
August 25, 2009 | Leave a Comment
I seem to be faced with hard selling almost everyday of my life, either in the form of a automated telephone call; a scripted call centre person who has a scripted answer for every objection; TV with the newest gadget I must buy now to get a special price; junk mail, email (many landing in my spam folder) or a website that makes wonderful promises with a buy button after every paragraph and keeps building to alleviate every doubt I may have.
Yet I have never bought from one of them!
Am I just not responsive to these types of mediums? Am I a hard sell? I often wish I had a real life spam folder to get rid of all the ‘junk’ coming at me. Do these mediums really work?
Do other people feel the same as me?
The thing is that I do go out and buy when I am in the market and might even consider an offer from a supplier I have a relationship with. I am highly unlikely to buy from any supplier who uses the methods above. I don’t think I trust them and feel that if they have to go to those lengths perhaps their product is not as good. Maybe I have trust issue!
I think the answer to getting me to buy lies in targeting me with relevant offers sent to me at the right time and stands out enough for me to notice. Offers that are honest and transparent and have respected my communication wishes.
I would love to be paid the money wasted on targeting me with offers that go straight in the bin.
What do you think? Do these hard sell methods really generate millions? Do you feel like me? What really works?
